NEW YORK: Why are Netflix bills going up in the empire state

TIMES UNION: If you have a Netflix subscription you should have received an email telling you that starting Dec. 15, they’ll be adding sales taxes to your monthly bill 

ALBANY: That’s because the online streaming company said in November that they would start adding games to their package.

While streaming videos like movies or TV series remain exempt from state and local taxes, games are not, thus the change.

For taxation purposes, games are viewed as software.

“Starting on Dec 15, 2021, your local sales tax will be applied starting on your next monthly bill,” states the notice that was recently emailed to Netflix subscribers....
