NYC: De Blasio unveils NYC green initiatives 9 days before his final day as mayor
DAILY NEWS: Mayor de Blasio unveiled several environmental initiatives Wednesday before signing into law a measure banning fossil fuels in newly constructed buildings — a move he hopes will hasten the city’s trajectory toward using only renewable energy.
The fossil fuel ban, which was passed by the City Council several days ago and comes nine days before de Blasio steps down as mayor, is intended to accelerate the construction of all-electric buildings and will phase in emission limits on them starting in 2023.
“The bottom line is we’re going to get buildings away from oil and gas, away from those fossil fuels, get them onto electricity, which is increasingly becoming renewable electricity,” he said at a Wednesday morning press briefing.
“This is part of how we wean ourselves off fossil fuels once and for all.”
Under the new law, new buildings must be fully electric by 2027 — with limited exceptions such as for commercial kitchens and emergency power.
The law also requires the city’s Office of Climate and Stability to conduct studies on the readiness of the Big Apple’s electrical grid.....
