BRONX: Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called on federal housing officials to help find permanent new homes for 90 Bronx families left homeless by the weekend fire that killed 17 people.
Two days after the tragedy, Schumer said existing law allows most of the 120 families affected by the deadly blaze to obtain new housing vouchers for permanent new apartments.
Schumer issued a letter to Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge on Tuesday asking her to work with state and city officials to quickly find suitable new homes for the impacted families.
“We need the feds to work hand-in-glove with the state and city to help make it happen as soon as possible,” he added.
The powerful lawmaker called it a “godsend” that the federal housing rules permit the families left homeless by the fire to apply their vouchers to other apartments elsewhere.
