NEW YORK POST: Students at many SUNY-approved charter schools are vastly outperforming their counterparts in neighboring traditional public schools in New York City, a new analysis obtained by The Post reveals.
The analysis — which involved third- through eighth-graders —was conducted by the State University of New York’s Charter Schools Institute, one of two entities that approve charters in the state.
The institute reviewed student performances on the state Education Department’s English Arts and Math standardized exams — and its report comes on the heels of legislation seeking to strip it of its legal authority to approve new charter schools.
The group has approved 219 charters in New York, including 186 in the Big Apple.
According to the report, 88 percent of SUNY charters in New York City did better than their neighboring traditional public schools on the English Language Arts exam in 2019, the last given before the coronavirus pandemic upended schools.
When it came to math, 91 percent of SUNY-authorized charters bested their surrounding local district schools, according to the study....
